The first game up was Vodafone B v Vodafone A but due to it being the Vodafone corporate games weekend both side seemed to have a different make up of players. "A" batted first having been put in and basically made a pig's ear of setting a total with only U Deshpande and M Mushtaq getting into double figures scoring 13 each and thus setting a total of 47-6. This was easily knocked off by R Higgs (15) and S Prakash (25) in two and a half overs earning Vodafone B a rest from the second game.

Here Vodafone A again lost the toss but RM Education decided to bat first. They made steady progress with the 2nd over going for 33 certainly helping their cause and they set the highest score of the week eclipsing their 99-1 by this time hitting 100-3 with T Razzaq 40 not out. Vodafone A were never in the hunt as only 9 runs came in each of the first two overs. With 18 off the 3rd doubling the score the task was impossible as they were eventually 53-all out in the middle of the last over.

So with both sides having won one game the "Final" was between RM Education how were put in by Vodafone B. A wicket second ball removed the powerful hitting of O Young but then J Mason decided that the final was the right place for him to show that he could bat. With 4 overs gone the game was reasonably balanced at 62-1 but 7 boundaries off the unfortunate A Cale bowling saw RME get to around their usual score this time 96-1 with O Young 40 not out and T Razzaq 48 not out.

Vodafone B therefore needed to have a big over somewhere during their innings. As the overs ticked by they were virtually matching RME's scores at the end of each over, so much so that when the 5th over was reached they were on 61-2. They even started the final over 4, 4, 2.... exactly the same as RME scored but then it all went wrong with only 4 more runs added from the final 5 balls as they reached 76-3 giving RME victory by 20 runs.

Wednesday 13th July

Day 3 unfortunately only saw 2 teams available to play; Quantel and RM Eductation so the evening was set up for a best of three match play off.

The 1st game saw RME bat first in an innings totally dominated  by O Young who scored 70 off only 25 balls as they set a total of 99-1. Quantel tried to respond with their opener S Odedra scoring 31 not out but they could only total 70-3 thus RME won by 29 runs.

The 2nd game saw Quantel try their luck batting first, but clearly tied from his efforts in the first game Odedra was caught on the boundary 1st ball by Young. H Thorton (26*) and T Hughes (22*) then batted through all the overs setting a target of 57-1. RME changed their batting order around and had only scored 14 from the opening two overs but then H Thornton had one of those overs you wish to forget conceding 36 runs meaning only 8 runs were required to win from the next two overs. Those runs were duly scored from G Thornton's over as RME won by 5 wickets with 8 balls remaining.

Thursday is a day off but Friday is "Finals Night" with RM Education being joined by both Vodafone A & B sides for another 3 way round robin night to determine this years winners and runners up.

Day 2 Quantel Businessmans Six a Side

Tuesday 12th July 2011

The first game today saw Metal Box take on Vodafone A with Metal Box batting first. K Khan started the night off with a bang, wreaking it for Metal Box as he opened with a treble wicket maiden. Metal Box never recovered from this being bowled out in the final over for only 35 - Yet another low opening score.

Vodafone A were never in trouble chasing this as S Khan and U Deshpandi picked up the singles knocking the score off in just over 3 overs.

The second match again saw Metal Box bat first this time against Carter Jonas. Without such a bad start Metal Box were able to go on and post a reasonable target to defend of 67-3 as Gary Rees top scored with 32.

The Carter Jonas reply was however dominated by James Theunissen who, after a slow start, built his innings before smashing four consecutive 6's off Copperdale's first 4 balls of his over to win the game (69-1) by 5 wickets with 12 balls remaining.

This set up a potentially fascinating last match between Carter Jonas, who elected to bowl first and Vodafone A.  Theunissen bowled bowled both S Khan and K Khan at the start of his over and then a tight one from McMurray saw last years winners on 21-2. However Pratheesh Rajpal started to open his shoulders hitting five 6's before being caught on the boundary in the last over for 56, but he had ensured a good total of 85-3 was achieved.

In reply 14 runs came from the first over and then 15 from the next but two wickets fell as well. Rajpal then came onto bowl and with his last three balls Murphy was run out and then the dangerous Theunissen and Read we both bowled and so ended the Carter Jonas chase as they were all out shortly afterwards for 39.

Both Vodafone side have now qualified for finals day on Friday so who will join then from Wednesday night's games???

Day 1 - Quantel Businessman's Six a Side

Monday 11th July

So Day 1 saw the first match of this years six a side competition start with MicroFocus batting first against Gardner Leader. Remember this is a five 8 ball over game with all outfield players bowling an over. A wicket maiden from Dadd saw the club main sponsor at 11-2 form 2 overs  and with 2 more wickets falling in the next over (13-4) things were left to the harden Welford veterans Edwards (20) and Bucknell (11) to get them to 44-6.

Holmes was the rock on which the Gardner Leader victory was to be built as his 20 not out ensured his side got home to a 4 wicket win with 10 balls remaining

Game 2 again saw Microfocus bat first this time against Vodafone B. A very slow scoring rate saw MF only on 29 - 3 with 3 balls remaining but some spectacular hitting from Edwards saw 14 more runs added thus making the final score 45-3

However it was again an opener, Siria Prakash (27) who was to see their opposition home despite Bucknell taking 2 wickets in his over as Vodafone B won by 3 wickets with 6 balls remaining

Game 3 was therefore the decider to see who would go thought to Fridays finals night. Just like the other two games a very low score of 40-6 was posted by Gardner Leader with only Dadd (11) and Shipp (15) getting into double figures.

With 22 coming off the first over Vodafone B seemed in total control but in stepped Dadd again taking 3 wickets for only 5 runs. When Davies took another wicket in the next over things were tight - wicket wise. 5 runs were needed with 20 balls to get them; then Mushtaq mistimed a shot toward the boundary, a fielder came round but could only palm it and the ball went for a boundary and with that so did Gardner Leaders chances as Vodafone B won by 2 wickets.

In summary a very low scoring day....I wonder what tomorrow will bring????
